Smokeless Fuels

Smokeless Fuels

Use smokeless fuels if you live in a smoke control zone to avoid a fine of up to £1,000. Contact the local authority to check whether you're in a smoke-free zone, or simply call us at V Catlow and Son to order delivery of your smokeless fuel.

Types of Smokeless Fuel

There are two basic types of smokeless fuel:

  • Anthracite
  • Ovoids

Anthracite Smokeless Fuels

Anthracite occurs naturally in deep mines, where millions of years of pressure have turned vegetable matter into a hard, metallic-looking substance which is up to 98% pure carbon. It burns slowly, without giving off the volatile materials and sulphurous gases associated with ordinary coal. It can seem expensive to buy, but its slow burn and high calorific content make it perfect for smokeless zones. Its purity means that it burns with a blue flame, gives off very little smoke and forms hardly any soot.

Ovoid Smokeless Fuels

Ovoid smokeless fuels are manufactured from coal and fillers, and pressed into egg shapes - hence the name. They come in various sizes, suitable for multi-fuel stoves, open fires and boilers. They burn slow and long, with a warm red glow, and are designed specifically for use in smoke controlled zones. Because they're smokeless, they generate little soot, so you don't have to worry about frequent chimney-sweeping - once or twice a year is usually enough. Use ovoid smokeless fuels for clean, efficient domestic heating. Order yours now from V Catlow & Sons Ltd - give us a call and we'll be happy to advise you on the best ovoid smokeless fuels for your domestic heating appliance.
